Windows Update - it cannot be run in Safe Mode but updates can only be manually downloaded and installed

Hotfixes - need to register and mail - fix the loopholes


The above contents together forms a Service Pack

Automatic Updates - BITS - Cryptographic - these 3 services are needed for auto updates

Automatic Updates are saved at

c:\windows\system32\catroot2 - contains catalogue
c:\windows\softwaredistribution - contains service packs ie KB's

Make sure that above two directories have administrator group and user as full access and every one with full control

windowsupdate.log - logfile

Registry - HKLM \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ Current version \ Windows Update

Resolution:

Check all the services are active
Active X component - IE - language ; security should be default ; add all update links to secure site list - uncheck HTTPS
Security Tab - Custom level - Enable active X addon
Do rest of IE optimization
Cleanboot
Stop cryptsvc - RUN > net stop cryptsvc - Rename catroot2 to catroot2old
Rename software distribution
Check for c:\windows\windowsupdate.log
dial-a-fix - download this file - IE; Secured Site; Window Installer; Windows Update - these 4 issues are fixed by it.

The proxy server may also stop windows

c:\windows\system32\catroot2 attrib *.* -hsr

Make a note of the error code that is generated on the microsoft update website if you are manually installing the updates
